DOCS on Ice to Support Local Concussion Program

February 13th, 2012 by PHCS

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 – It was announced earlier today that all funds raised from the upcoming 30th anniversary of the DOCS on Ice (Doctors of Ontario Charity) hockey tournament will be supporting the local Youth Sports Concussion Program and organizers are expecting that total to be in the region of $150,000.  Registration fees paid by the 800 physicians that participate cover the operational costs of the event and every single penny raised through sponsorship and in-kind donations goes directly to supporting the Youth Sports Concussion Program in providing free baseline testing for students from grades 5 – 12 across Peterborough City and County.

“We are thrilled to be supporting the Youth Sports Concussion Program and are very grateful to all our tournament sponsors and this year’s ambassador, NHL legend Steve Larmer,” said Rick Binette, Chairman, DOCS on Ice 2012.  “I would especially like to thank our platinum sponsors Scotiabank, Walton Financial, MERCK, Tim Horton’s and Health Care Relocations, as well as Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough whom have been instrumental in organizing the event.  Through sponsorship of the tournament we expect to raise enough money to sustain the Youth Sports Concussion Program for the next 5 years in our community.  It is our hope that the 30th anniversary of the tournament, which originated here in Peterborough, will be the best one yet!”

The tournament will be taking place March 29- 31, 2012 across the City and County, with arenas booked at the Kinsmen, Evinrude, Memorial Centre, Douro, Norwood.   A cocktail reception kicks off the tournament on Thursday night, hockey games are played all day Friday and Saturday and the Gala Dinner will be taking place Friday evening as the Memorial Centre ice is transformed into a banquet hall as guests will enjoy MC, Dan O’Toole, guest speaker Ken Dryden and a special performance by Leahy.  Another addition to the tournament this year is the Player’s Lounge, where players can relax between games on comfy sofas, play video and table games supplied by Costco, enjoy complimentary Tim Horton’s coffee and timbits, watch hockey highlights and view the tradeshow booths that will be on exhibit over the duration of the tournament.

Volunteers are required for all of the above mentioned activities including greeting guests, registering teams, timekeeping at the arenas, assisting with event set-up at the dinner and even updating the game score sheets.  Sponsorship opportunities also exist and anyone interested in volunteering or sponsoring is encouraged to contact the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation at (705) 740-8074.

DOCS on Ice would like to thank all their current event sponsors including: Scotiabank, Walton Financial, MERCK, Tim Horton’s and Health Care Relocations, Helix Hearing Care, Peterborough Destination Association, Bayshore Home Health, Medigas, Axon Sports, Darling Insurance, OMA, Medvue, Ontario College of Family Physicians, Douro-Dummer Township, Canadian Tire, Lakefield College, Coach Canada, Peterborough Pro-Hockey Players Association, Costco and Norwood Township.  For more information please visit www.docsonice.ca
