For Non-Urgent Matters Patients Should Contact Family Doctor
December 19, 2011 – The Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams want patients to know that primary care is still available over the holiday season. Patients are encouraged to phone their family doctor’s office for appointments for non-urgent matters as physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health clinicians, registered dietitians, pharmacists and registered nurses continue to provide care for the 117,000 patients attached to Family Health Teams. Regular office hours as well as after hours and extended care hours will be available and details for each Family Health Teams’ schedule are available by calling your family doctor’s office.
“We want to ensure that patients know that their Family Health Team is available to them over the holiday season, just like any other time of year,” said Dr. Don Harterre, Physician Lead, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough. “In the last year, 98% of non-urgent care took place in the primary care setting between regular offices hours with less than 2% visiting the ER. We want to ensure that this trend continues over the holiday season.”
The 5 Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams saw 414,411 patient visits in 2010 which included a total of 27,125 visits to the extended hours care services provided by our teams. It is important for patients to know that as part of a Family Health Team, they have access to extended hour clinics.
Primary Health Care Services is the parent organization of the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams. The five teams include 83 physicians and are funded for 20.6 nurse practitioners, 6.2 registered dietitians, 13 mental health clinicians, 2.9 pharmacists, 23.3 registered nurses and 15.5 clerical staff, working collaboratively to provide comprehensive primary care across Peterborough County in Ontario, Canada. The Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams are dedicated to expanding access to primary care in our community. Since their creation, the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams have enrolled over 27,000 new patients.
