Have your say by taking part in the International Parent Survey-Canada

The on-line International Parent Survey-Canada has been developed to get input from parents just like you. The survey will ask you questions about your child’s behaviour, your confidence in responding to problems your child experiences, and how you manage your child’s behaviour. The survey will also ask you about your preferences on how to get support in parenting. A few minutes of your time to respond to this survey will help organizations in your communitydesign supports and programs to meet your needs and preferences.

- Free Community Concussion Symposium -

Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough is proud to announce an upcoming Concussion Symposium hosted by Ken Dryden and the Youth Sports Concussion Program, taking place at The Venue on Wednesday, March 28th starting at 1 pm. The event will be open to the public and completely free of charge, featuring a variety of speakers as well as an open panel discussion and Question and Answer period from the audience. A variety of speakers are participating to provide the many perspectives of concussion injuries and issues including players, families, sports organizations, physicians and prevention experts and anyone interested is encouraged to come and participate in the concussion discussion.

“We are very excited to be hosting this open forum with Ken Dryden as we feel public education and engagement is a key piece of our Youth Sports Concussion Program,” said Bill Casey, Executive Director, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough. “Our program focuses on creating best practices and standardized care model across the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams focusing on diagnosis, treatment and management of concussions. We have designed all of the training and education materials so they can easily be implemented in primary care settings across the province and country. Working in partnership with our local school boards we have been able to pilot the baseline testing process and to date provided free baselines for nearly 1,000 students. We are now moving beyond pilot and will be providing free baseline testing to students grades 5 – 12 in schools across our city and county by the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. With the recent provincial announcement regarding concussion legislation in schools, Peterborough is in position to take an active leadership role.”

The Concussion Symposium will cover many topics including patient stories, perspectives from sports administrators, trainers, players, prevention experts and physicians. Confirmed speakers include:

Ken Dryden, former MP and professional hockey player and concussion education and prevention advocate

Dr. Susan Forbes, Adjunct Professor, School of Kinesiology and Injury Research Project Manager, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Lakehead University

Kerry Goulet, former professional hockey player and co-founder with Keith Primeau of stopconcussion.com

Brian Miller, Head Trainer, Peterborough Petes

Dr. Bob Neville, family physician, Chair, Youth Sports Concussion Program and OHL Board of Governor’s member

Dr. Derek Krete, physiatrist, M.D., F.R.C.P.C. Dip. ABPMR, Sub-Specialty Cert Sports Medicine, Specialist Lead, Youth Sports Concussion Program

Dr. Don Harterre, Physician Lead, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough

Laura Young, 18 year-old recent St. Peter’s graduate who suffered 3 concussions

Scott Wasson, former hockey player living with post-concussive syndrome

“We encourage anyone who wants to learn more about this issue or who wants to share their thoughts and experiences to join us,” said Ken Dryden. “The issue of head injuries in sports is not going away. We need better diagnosis and treatment, but we also need to find ways of playing the games we love in a more “headsmart” way. The Youth Sports Concussion Program brings together the resources of the Peterborough community in an ambitious and coordinated response to the problem, and offers a model for the country. But it too needs to learn and grow, and you can help it.”

The Youth Sports Concussion Program has been created to develop and implement best practices in the assessment, treatment and prevention of concussions in youth from the ages of 10 right through until high school graduation, reaching 15,000 students within our community. The program, the first of its kind in Canada, is a collaboration between primary care providers and specialists and will establish standardized guidelines for concussion management for all health care providers across the 5 Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams. The Youth Sports Concussion Program is being administrated by Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough in partnership with Dr. Derek Krete. Currently there is no government support for this initiative; however, with the efforts of our local health care practitioners, financial support from community fundraising and the efforts of the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough is now in position to move beyond the pilot phase into full implementation across our community.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 – It was announced earlier today that all funds raised from the upcoming 30th anniversary of the DOCS on Ice (Doctors of Ontario Charity) hockey tournament will be supporting the local Youth Sports Concussion Program and organizers are expecting that total to be in the region of $150,000. Registration fees paid by the 800 physicians that participate cover the operational costs of the event and every single penny raised through sponsorship and in-kind donations goes directly to supporting the Youth Sports Concussion Program in providing free baseline testing for students from grades 5 – 12 across Peterborough City and County.

“We are thrilled to be supporting the Youth Sports Concussion Program and are very grateful to all our tournament sponsors and this year’s ambassador, NHL legend Steve Larmer,” said Rick Binette, Chairman, DOCS on Ice 2012. “I would especially like to thank our platinum sponsors Scotiabank, Walton Financial, MERCK, Tim Horton’s and Health Care Relocations, as well as Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough whom have been instrumental in organizing the event. Through sponsorship of the tournament we expect to raise enough money to sustain the Youth Sports Concussion Program for the next 5 years in our community. It is our hope that the 30th anniversary of the tournament, which originated here in Peterborough, will be the best one yet!”

The tournament will be taking place March 29- 31, 2012 across the City and County, with arenas booked at the Kinsmen, Evinrude, Memorial Centre, Douro, Norwood. A cocktail reception kicks off the tournament on Thursday night, hockey games are played all day Friday and Saturday and the Gala Dinner will be taking place Friday evening as the Memorial Centre ice is transformed into a banquet hall as guests will enjoy MC, Dan O’Toole, guest speaker Ken Dryden and a special performance by Leahy. Another addition to the tournament this year is the Player’s Lounge, where players can relax between games on comfy sofas, play video and table games supplied by Costco, enjoy complimentary Tim Horton’s coffee and timbits, watch hockey highlights and view the tradeshow booths that will be on exhibit over the duration of the tournament.

Volunteers are required for all of the above mentioned activities including greeting guests, registering teams, timekeeping at the arenas, assisting with event set-up at the dinner and even updating the game score sheets. Sponsorship opportunities also exist and anyone interested in volunteering or sponsoring is encouraged to contact the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation at (705) 740-8074.

DOCS on Ice would like to thank all their current event sponsors including: Scotiabank, Walton Financial, MERCK, Tim Horton’s and Health Care Relocations, Helix Hearing Care, Peterborough Destination Association, Bayshore Home Health, Medigas, Axon Sports, Darling Insurance, OMA, Medvue, Ontario College of Family Physicians, Douro-Dummer Township, Canadian Tire, Lakefield College, Coach Canada, Peterborough Pro-Hockey Players Association, Costco and Norwood Township. For more information please visit www.docsonice.ca

December 19, 2011 – The Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams want patients to know that primary care is still available over the holiday season. Patients are encouraged to phone their family doctor’s office for appointments for non-urgent matters as physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health clinicians, registered dietitians, pharmacists and registered nurses continue to provide care for the 117,000 patients attached to Family Health Teams. Regular office hours as well as after hours and extended care hours will be available and details for each Family Health Teams’ schedule are available by calling your family doctor’s office.

“We want to ensure that patients know that their Family Health Team is available to them over the holiday season, just like any other time of year,” said Dr. Don Harterre, Physician Lead, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough. “In the last year, 98% of non-urgent care took place in the primary care setting between regular offices hours with less than 2% visiting the ER. We want to ensure that this trend continues over the holiday season.”

The 5 Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams saw 414,411 patient visits in 2010 which included a total of 27,125 visits to the extended hours care services provided by our teams. It is important for patients to know that as part of a Family Health Team, they have access to extended hour clinics.

Primary Health Care Services is the parent organization of the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams. The five teams include 83 physicians and are funded for 20.6 nurse practitioners, 6.2 registered dietitians,
13 mental health clinicians, 2.9 pharmacists, 23.3 registered nurses and 15.5 clerical staff, working collaboratively to provide comprehensive primary care across Peterborough County in Ontario, Canada. The Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams are dedicated to expanding access to primary care in our community. Since their creation, the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams have enrolled over 27,000 new patients.

December 15, 2011 – Students at Immaculate Conception, St. Teresa and St. Joseph, Douro,Catholic elementary schools will be the firstschools to participate in the Youth Sports Concussion Program with Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School coming on board as the very first secondary school. As part of the program, free baseline screenings are being provided to students age 10 right through until high school graduation that will be administered at the school by the Youth Sports Concussion Program. The assessment is an on-line 8 minute Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool (CCAT) and will create a baseline measurement which captures the students cognitive functioning when the brain is healthy. Repeating the same test after injury will assist healthcare providers in clinical diagnosis and treatment plans. Free baseline previews are available at www.yscp.ca

“We are pleased to participate in this important partnership involving our students, their families, our schools and Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough,” says Greg Reeves, Director of Education for the Catholic District School Board. “The Youth Sports Concussion Program will focus attention on the issue of concussion and better management of risk in young athletes, and that is important. We are fully supportive of this initiative and think it’s the right thing to do to help protect youth in our Catholic schools.”

“It’s important for parents to understand that the baseline CCAT is not an IQ or performance based test. It has no value other than to take a snapshot of the brains’ functioning pre-injury and is as unique as a finger print,” said Victoria Steeves, Student Achievement Consultant for the Catholic Board. “Each school will have an assembly to explain the program. Detailswill be announced in the school newsletter and parents will beinvited to attend. Information packages and parental consent forms will be sent home and parents are encouraged to visit the Youth Sports Concussion website at www.yscp.ca or discuss the program with their school Principal at any time.”

The Youth Sports Concussion Program has been created to develop and implement best practices in the assessment, treatment and prevention of concussions in youth from the ages of 10 right through until high school graduation, reaching more than 15,000 students across the city and county of Peterborough. The program, the first of its kind in Canada, is a collaboration between primary care providers and specialists and will establish standardized guidelines for concussion management for all healthcare providers across the 5 Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams. The program is being administered by Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough in partnership with Dr. Derek Krete and baseline screens are being provided completely free of charge thanks to fundraising efforts of the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation.

“Not only have we been able to standardize guidelines for concussion management across our teams, but we have been able to provide further education for our physicians and nurse practitioners and create resource tools to support concussion management,” said Dr. Don Harterre, Physician Lead, Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough. “We feel another important tool is to have a baseline for all students, so that if they sustain an injury, be it from sports or any other activity, we have objective information specific to that individual. This will help us to not only inform clinical decisions, but to ensure that the student doesn’t return to school sports or recreation activities before they have had a chance to heal.”

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a hit, bump or jolt to the head or body and can occur without loss of consciousness. Sports related concussions occur in the greatest frequency in the pediatric and young adult age ranges and recovery takes longer in these age groups. All concussions should be taken seriously. For signs and symptoms of a concussion and further information, please visit www.yscp.ca
