Mental Health Programs


Mindfulness & Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Program led by: Mental Health Clinicians

Do you want to live in the moment? Do you want to let go of worries about the future and regrets of the past?

If you are motivated for change, these programs can help with stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, cardiac recovery and other health concerns worsened by stress. These are not therapy groups; they are programs to help us learn new skills for managing stress and life challenges.

Both programs meet weekly for 2 hours, for a total of 10 weeks. The MBCT program is especially for those who are currently experiencing or at risk of relapse for depression and/or for those people who have struggled with long term anxiety.

The Mindfulness program may be for you if:

  • You are 21 years of age or older
  • You can sit or stand for 2 hours
  • You are motivated and committed; this program requires practicing new skills every day
  • You can handle emotional situations

The Mindfulness program may NOT be for you if:

  • You are experiencing a life crisis or require urgent mental health service
  • You have a cognitive challenge that would interrupt your ability to learn, remember and practice new material
  • You have difficulty containing and managing your emotions

 

Participants of the Mindfulness program are expected to practice the guided meditations, provided by the mental health clinicians of Peterborough Family Health Team. Begin to ease your stress and reduce your anxiety through the Calm Place meditation below.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Sleepless in Peterborough: CBT-Insomnia

Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep?

This program teaches you strategies and explores how thoughts and behaviours interact to interrupt sleep. This is first choice of treatment for people who experience issues with insomnia or poor sleep.

This program meets weekly for 1.5 hours, for a total of 6 weeks. In this program, an individualized sleep plan will be developed. Participants are expected to follow through on their sleep plan and practice the strategies on a daily basis.

Sleepless in Peterborough may be for you if: 

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing sleep that is not restful
  • You are interested in a medication-free solution to insomnia
  • You can sit or stand in a room for 1.5 hours
  • You are motivated and committed. You will need to practice homework every evening. This could temporarily mean you feel more tired as you work with new strategies.

Sleepless in Peterborough may NOT be for you if: 

  • You have been regularly using prescription sleep medications to manage your sleep
  • You experience medical or sleep conditions like sleep apnea. This program will not be addressing these conditions
  • You have a cognitive challenge that would interrupt your ability to learn, remember and practice new material

Reconnect Graduate GroupZen Garden

This monthly drop-in group will reinforce teachings from the Mindfulness program and will allow you to expand and further develop mindfulness and meditation practice.
