Overview

Buckhorn Regional Health Center is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) or RPN/Phlebotomist to join our primary care clinic in Buckhorn, Ontario. The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)/Phlebotomist is an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team who works co-operatively with all members of the healthcare team in the promotion of patient health and prevention of disease. The RPN will practice within their scope of practice as outlined in the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario. We appreciate that some RPN candidates may not have phlebotomy experience. We welcome applications for either:

  • RPN (nursing‑only role)
  • RPN/Phlebotomist (dual role)

Key Responsibilities

RPN Clinical Duties

  • Conduct focused health assessments and obtain patient histories
  • Identify health needs, develop care plans, and document in the EMR
  • Provide patient education, health promotion, and disease‑prevention support
  • Administer immunizations and injections
  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, suture/staple removal
  • Conduct routine tests (vitals, point‑of‑care testing)
  • Triage urgent concerns and coordinate care with the team
  • Assist with minor procedures and prepare exam rooms
  • Maintain clinical supplies, sterilize equipment, and manage vaccines
  • Perform ECGs (training provided)
  • Other duties as assigned with appropriate training

Phlebotomy Duties (for dual‑role applicants)

  • Greet patients and verify identification
  • Perform venipuncture, capillary sampling, and specimen preparation
  • Ensure proper labeling, documentation, and EMR entry
  • Prepare specimens for transport
  • Perform ECGs where applicable

The above responsibilities are not to be considered all-inclusive; they may be assigned other related duties in the interest of efficient operations of Buckhorn Regional Health Center.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Practical Nursing and 2–3 years clinical experience
  • Current CNO registration in good standing
  • Strong assessment and triage skills
  • Phlebotomy experience or certification (preferred for dual role)
  • CPR certification and ongoing clinical competencies
  • Knowledge of infection control practices
  • Proficiency with EMRs; Telus PS Suite experience is an asset
  • Member of WeRPN (preferred)
  • Professional liability insurance (required)
  • Ability to perform physical duties (standing, lifting, bending)
  • Willingness to obtain pelvic exam certification (asset)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and professionalism

Additional Team Responsibilities

  • Provide occasional reception backup
  • Support quality improvement initiatives
  • Participate in continuing education
  • Assist with onboarding new staff
  • Contribute to community relationships that enhance patient access

Work Schedule

RPN (Nursing‑Only Role)

  • 7 hours/day, including a paid 1‑hour lunch
  • 3 days per week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
  • Hours: 08:45–15:45

RPN/Phlebotomist (Dual Role)

  • All RPN hours above plus
  • Approximately 4 hours on Wednesday morning for phlebotomy services

Clinic Hours: Monday–Thursday

Compensation

  • $27–$30 per hour, based on experience

Location Requirement

This position is on‑site in Buckhorn, Ontario. Candidates must be able to travel to and from Buckhorn reliably.
